Proving ground match added to ROH Glory By Honor X

0

From ROHWrestling.com:

Jay Lethal claimed the ROH World TV Title on 8/13/11 from El Generico and has successfully defended the title on one occasion against “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett (recently seen on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” here).  Another title defense is on the slate for Lethal on 11/5 when he meets Generico in a hotly anticipated rematch, but ROH officials are looking to see who will be next in the line for the winner of that bout.  Thus “The Proving Ground” comes to ROH’s annual “Glory by Honor” event, and the man stepping up to the challenge is former ROH World & former ROH World Tag Team Champion Roderick Strong.

“The idea that I have to prove myself is absolute garbage.” said Roderick, “I’m a former World Champion, a former tag champion, not to mention the best athlete in Ring of Honor, and I still have to jump through hoops to get a title match?  Whatever bro, I’ll play your games. I’ll kick Jay Lethal’s ass in Chicago, then I’ll take the TV title, then I’ll be ROH’s 2nd Triple Crown Champion. It’s that simple.  There’s your dose of truth Ring of Honor, I hope you choke on it.”

To clarify, a Proving Ground match is contested when a champion fights in a non-title contest.  The match is one fall to a finish, 20 minute time limit for this specific bout, and should Strong either defeat Lethal, or go the distance, than Roderick will receive a future World TV Title match.

These two warriors were very familiar with one another in the early days of their ROH careers, in fact Strong’s very first ROH bout was against Jay Lethal (then Hydro) at “Do or Die II”, but these are two very different athletes when compared to the 2004 versions of themselves.  They have both experienced life & career changing moments, have grown both as wrestlers and as men, and now meet on The Proving Ground to see who is the better man.  The only question, the only thing that could have an effect on this bout now, is whether or not Lethal makes it past Generico on 11/5 with the TV Title still in his possession…

Lethal vs. Strong in “The Proving Ground”; it goes down on 11/19 at “Glory by Honor X” in Chicago Ridge, IL.  Tickets are available here!

From ROHWrestling.com:

Jay & Mark Briscoe have defined tag team wrestling in Ring of Honor since day one.  As part of ROH from the very first event in 2002, the brothers from Sandy Fork, DE have captured the ROH World Tag Titles multiple times with a fast-paced, hard-hitting, risk-taking style that has certainly cemented them as ROH Legends.  As a duo, they have faced every team that has ever set foot into the ROH ring and dominated them with their tag team excellence and with their willingness to brawl it out if the situation calls for it.  With their title bouts against teams such as Austin Aries & Roderick Strong, their brutal Ladder War, or their state of the art contests against Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin, Jay & Mark have demonstrated why they are the most respected team in ROH history.  Fearless, confident, and driven, the Briscoe Brothers are indeed the baddest tag team on the planet!

ROH addresses Nigel McGuinness situation

0

From ROHWrestling.com:

As seen this weekend at the close of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” on SBG networks nationwide, or here on ROHWrestling.com, former ROH World Champion & current ROH Announcer Nigel McGuinness nearly got involved in a physical altercation with The House of Truth following Eddie Edwards’ victory over Michael Elgin.

The HoT seemed poised to play the numbers game against Edwards when Roderick Strong came to the ring following Edwards’ win, but McGuinness left his position at the commentary table to even the odds.  While ROH officials know that Nigel was only attempting to prevent an unfair assault, this is a situation that must be addressed.

“Nigel McGuinness is not contracted to Ring of Honor as an active in-ring competitor.” Said Jim Cornette, “Nigel is contracted solely as a commentator and in the future must not enter the ring unless he is assigned to be officials for the purpose of conducting an interview or whatever other duties fall under his role as commentator.  Nigel getting in the ring like he did to back up Eddie is a liability to ROH, and to Nigel himself.  This is something that can’t happen again unless Nigel is signed on as an in-ring competitor.”

Final ROH S.O.T.F. entrants announced

0

From ROHWrestling.com:

“The Prodigy” Mike Bennett, Tommaso Ciampa, Kyle O’Reilly, “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin, “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards, Roderick Strong, Kenny King, Rhett Titus, Adam Cole, Lancelot Bravado, Harlem Bravado, Andy “Right Leg” Ridge…

Those are the 12 men entered into “Survival of the Fittest 2011” thus far with 2 names remaining to be announced.  Those final two entrants have been set, and they are two ROH originals who have proudly represented since “day one”…

Jay & Mark Briscoe

Jay – 2004 Survival of the Fittest Qualifier (eliminated by Homicide)

Mark – 2004 Survival of the Fittest Finalist

2006 Survival of the Fittest Finalists

The Briscoes have seen SOTF competition before, albeit not in quite some time, but they are familiar with the format, just as they are familiar with the majority of their potential opponents.  The brothers from Sandy Fork have seen and done almost everything here in Ring of Honor, but one thing that has eluded them both during the tenures here has been a singles championship.  They’ve both fought for the World Title, Mark has pursued the TV Title, but neither has accomplished those feats to date.  SOTF ’12 represents the opportunity for either man to get one step closer, and it is certain these two will support one another in their bids to get there.  And should it come down to Jay vs. Mark as the last two men standing…well history shows these two have no problem laying a beating on one another…

Tickets for “Survival of the Fittest 2011” in Dayton, OH are available right here in the ROH Store so get yours while you still can!  Which of these 14 warriors will emerge as the top contender for the ROH World Title?  Be there to find out!

ROH Glory By Honor X Main Event announced

0

From ROHWrestling.com:

With his first World Title defense in an ROH ring under his belt a second looms on the horizon when Ring of Honor returns to Chicago Ridge, IL on Saturday night November 19th.  But the question is: just who will challenge Davey Richards at the Frontier Fieldhouse? Today ROH officials provide the answer…

The man who will challenge “The American Wolf” will be a former ROH World Tag Team Champion, a former ROH World TV Champion, “The Generic Luchador” El Generico!

2011 has been a very successful year for El Generico but has been filled with many highs, and quite a few lows.  The year started with back-to-back victories at “Champions vs. All-Stars” and “Only The Strong Survive”, leading into Generico’s 1st ROH World Title match in 2 years at “SoCal Showdown II” against Roderick Strong.

That night El Generico showed unbelievable resiliency as he took everything Strong had in his arsenal, and kept fighting back. Roderick was forced to illegally use the ROH title belt as a weapon behind the referees back in order to finally keep Generico down for the three count and retain the title.

The next several months were filled with a mix of wins and losses, including being blocked from challenging Roderick in any future World Title matches with Generico’s loss at “Defy or Deny”.  It seemed Generico would go without revenge following multiple humiliations at the hands of Strong & The House of Truth.  But that all changed after Strong lost the title at “Manhattan Mayhem IV” to Eddie Edwards; the window was once again open for Generico to get his revenge on Roderick.

That chance came at “Honor Takes Center Stage: Chapter 2” when El Generico defeated Roderick Strong but again was assaulted by the entire HoT, including its newest member ROH World TV Champion Christopher Daniels. At “Revolution: USA”, Strong again put down Generico in a No DQ bout, but the following night at “Revolution: Canada” Generico struck back against the HoT with a non-title victory over Christopher Daniels, thus earning himself a TV Title match down the line.

The opportunity came at “Best in the World 2011” where Generico, coming off a win over Chris Hero at “Supercard of Honor VI”, parleyed that momentum into a victory over Daniels, making Generico the 3rd ever ROH World TV Champion!  Generico now held his first singles title, but the score still needed to be settled with Roderick.

After an unsuccessful bid for the ROH World Tag Titles at “Tag Team Turmoil 2011”, Generico & Strong entered into a Steel Cage at “No Escape” on July 9th, 2011 to settle the score. Generico defeated Strong that night, earning his retribution, and scoring a second pinfall victory over the former ROH World Champion.

Unfortunately Generico hit another down in 2011 as he lost the ROH World TV title to Jay Lethal on the 10/1/11 episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” (still available to Ringside Members here) and had a top-shelf collision with Jimmy Jacobs at “Death Before Dishonor IX” ruined.  Still despite those lows, the highs far outweigh, and passed on his year long record of strong wins, impressive outings, and overall popularity, El Generico has earned himself a championship bout against current ROH World & current IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Champion Davey Richards.

“I’ve known Generico for a long time now.” Said the champion, “We’ve been brutal enemies, we’ve fought over titles, we’ve definitely hurt one another, but through that all…because of that all…I can say that I respect the man.  There aren’t too many people with the heart, the passion, and the will to succeed that Generico has, and I respect that in a fighter.  I look forward to this fight.  No tension, no bitterness, just two men battling it out over the most important World title in wrestling, to see who is the better man.  I think I already know the answer to that question.”

“Glory by Honor X”, November 19th in Chicago Ridge, ROH World Champion Davey Richars defends his title against El Generico.  Can Generico become the 2nd man in ROH to claim the Triple Crown? Or will Richards’ reign continue on towards 2012?  Tickets are available now!

Two more competitiors announced for ROH S.O.T.F. 2011

0
From ROHWrestling.com:

Yesterday Lance & Harlem Bravado were entered into “Survival of the Fittest 2011” field as the 7th & 8th members of the tournament.  Today ROH officials have set the 9th & 10th entrants into the elimination bouts as 14 men compete for a future shot at the ROH World Title.

Kyle O’Reilly

2010 Survival of the Fittest Qualifier (Eliminated in qualifying bout)

Last year O’Reilly entered into the SOTF tournament as a certified underdog, a competitor that was a longshot to advance, and unfortunately for him he faced off with a vicious opponent in the opening round and did not make it into the finals.  But the wars of the last year, including competing in both the Top Prospect & Tag Lottery tournaments, have hardened Kyle and given him experience that he was sorely lacking one year ago.  This year he is poised to challenge for the ROH World Tag Titles just two short weeks before entering into the SOTF field, potentially making November the biggest month of his young career.  And what would it be like for Kyle to challenge his own mentor for the ROH World Title should be survive?

“Unbreakable” Michael Elgin

Michael Elgin has never competed in SOTF before, but the event is still a life changing one for him.  It was at “Survival of the Fittest 2010” when Elgin was introduced as a member of the House of Truth, teaming with Roderick Strong & Zach Gowen to battle The Briscoes & Christopher Daniels.  In the year since that landmark moment in Elgin’s life, he has cut a swath of destruction through Ring of Honor, demonstrating his unparalleled power and cementing his standing as the strongest man in ROH.  With “SOTF ‘11” on the horizon, Elgin now has the opportunity to propel himself into World Title contention and bring the belt back to The House of Truth.

Tickets for “Survival of the Fittest 2011”, going down in Dayton, OH on 11/18, can be purchased right here in the ROH Store, and keep an eye on ROHWrestling.com as we continue to announce this year’s field for Survival of the Fittest!

The Next Two ROH SOTF competitors are set

0

From ROHWrestling.com:

So far Andy Ridge, Eddie Edwards, Kenny King, and Roderick Strong have been announced for this year’s field of 14 entrants into the “Survival of the Fittest 2011″ tournament going down at The Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton, OH on November 18th.  ROH officials have now put two more names into the running as these men pursue a future shot at the ROH World Title.

Rhett Titus
Survival of the Fittest 2009 Qualifier (eliminated by Roderick Strong)
Survival of the Fittest 2010 Finalist

Titus is not a stranger to SOTF having competed in the two previous tournaments.  In 2009 he was put out in the qualifiers by Roderick Strong but 2010 saw Titus knock Colt Cabana out of the running to get Rhett into the final 6.  Claudio Castagnoli put Titus out of the finals, as he did 2 other men, but it gave Rhett a glimpse at what awaits the winner of the tournament when his partner, Kenny King, made it to the final two.  2011 though has truly been a breakout year for the ANX as a whole and Titus specifically as they have fought their way to the top of the tag team division, and made an impact as individuals as well.  Given the momentum he has garnered over the year, the 2011 SOTF could be the defining moment thus far for Titus’ career as a singles competitor.

Adam Cole
Survival of the Fittest 2010 Finalist

The spoiler of last year’s tournament, Adam Cole upset Steve Corino in the opening round of his only SOTF tournament before being eliminated by Claudio in the 6-Man finals.  Since that experience, a majority of Cole’s time has been spent honing his craft as a tag team wrestler alongside his Future Shock partner, Kyle O’Reilly, but Cole has still put some singles experience under his belt during that time.  Coming into this year’s SOTF, Cole is poised to challenge for the ROH World Tag Titles on 11/6 in Collinsville, potentially making November the biggest month of his young career.  Will it be the month that Cole does indeed shock the world?

Tickets for “Survival of the Fittest 2011″ can be purchased right here, and keep your browsers on ROHWrestling.com as we announced the other competitors for SOTF ’11!

More ROH Survival Of The Fittest 2011 Updates

0

From ROHWrestling.com:

Former ROH World Champion & the only Triple Crown Winner in ROH history, “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards was named to the “Survival of the Fittest 2011″ field yesterday, joining Andy “Right Leg” Ridge in the men competing in qualifying bouts in Dayton, OH on November 18th.  ROH officials have now determined the next of the 14 competitors battling it out to earn a shot at the ROH World Title!

Roderick Strong
Former ROH World Champion
Former ROH World Tag Champion
2005 Survival of the Fittest Winner

Roderick is no stranger to the SOTF tournament, having competed in it every year but 2010 when he was the reigning champion.  Of those years, Strong has made it to the finals on 3 occasions, and captured the crown in 2005 when he beat his own tag partner Austin Aries to earn that future shot at the ROH World Title.  2011 has marked an erratic year for Roderick as he entered the ROH World Champion but, since losing the belt to Eddie Edwards at “Manhattan Mayhem IV”, he has been on a bit of a downward slide, losing more than he has been winning, including multiple rematches with Edwards.  A victory in this year’s SOTF maybe just the thing that Strong needs to get back on track and push his way back into contention for the ROH World Title currently around Davey Richards’ waist.

Kenny King
2010 Survival of the Fittest Finalist

In the opposite vein of Roderick Strong, 2011 has been the year in which Kenny King, along with his ANX partner Rhett Titus, has elevated himself to new heights. Many fans have called it a breakout year for “The Pretty Boy Pitbull” as battles with Jay & Mark Briscoe have brought out a whole new side, a rather violent side, to Kenny that had never been seen before here in ROH.  That new-found killer attitude led to a victory in the brutal Ladder War III at “Death Before Dishonor IX”, and has the ANX poised for a World Tag Title bout at “Glory by Honor X” in Chicago Ridge on November 19th.  As for SOTF, Kenny has participated in the last two years, falling to Tyler Black in a 2009 Qualifying bout, but going toe-to-toe with Eddie Edwards in 2010 when they were the last men standing.  Edwards won, and went on to capture the World Title, but being so close gave Kenny a taste of what individual greatness is like.  With SOTF on Friday and a World Tag Title match on Saturday, this November weekend could be the biggest two days in the life of Kenny King.

Four competitors have been named, ten more remain, who will step up to the plate in 2011 and earn the right to be called survivor?  Be there live to find out; tickets are available now.
