Jim Ross Blogs on RVD’s Return, Curtis Axel, & Compares Ziggler vs Del Rio at “Payback” to Austin vs Hart

0

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is back with a new blog on jrsbarbq.com, featuring thoughts on Payback and more. Here are some highlights:

- The WWE production of the “Legends of Mid South Wrestling” DVD which comes out on September 10 has some amazing matches that will be featured including and here’s a partial list:

Ted DiBiase vs. Paul Ordnorff
Andre, Dusty Rhodes & JYD vs The Wild Samoans and Ernie Ladd (All WWE HOFers)
Jim Duggan vs. DiBiase Coal Miner’s Glove, Tuxedo, Loser Leaves Town Match
Wrestling 2 mentoring Magnum TA storyline
JYD Tarred and Feathered storyline
JYD vs. Hacksaw Butch Reed (Ghetto Street Fight)
Rock ‘n Roll vs. Midnight Express (a series of bouts..all tremendous)
HBK vs. DiBiase (Shawn’s rookie year)
Rick Steiner vs. Nick Patrick (Steiner was a rookie and Nick became a great referee)
Ric Flair vs. DiBiase NWA Title Bout (amazing)
A UWF match featuring the Bladerunners, Sting & Rock aka Ultimate Warrior
Terry Gordy vs. Duggan UWF Title (A legit Slobber Knocker)
DiBiase & Dr. Death vs. Freebirds in a Lumberjack match (‘Birds loved the heat!)
Gordy vs Doc UWF Title Bout (A Classic..lead to the formation of an extraordinary team)
Doc Vs. Bubba Rogers aka Big Bossman UWF Title (1 of my favorite matches I ever called)
One Man Gang vs. Big Bubba Rogers UWF Title (Textbook, Super Heavyweight bout)

- Good for Cutis Axel, the new IC Champion. I wish some cynical fans would stop second guessing every more this kid makes until he can get a little farther down the road in his career journey. I’m confident he will evolve into a significant asset for WWE.

- The Ziggler vs. Del Rio match had some psychological qualities of the WM13 bout between Bret Hart and Stone Cold. Great in ring storytelling that provides more questions than answers and plenty of follow up material for episodic TV. Del Rio seems more comfortable in the antagonist tole than he does as a fan favorite. However, I do think that many Hispanic fans will still support their countryman. I’m more interested in the personas of both ADR and Ziggler now than I was prior to Payback.

- With the return of RVD to MITB in July and coming off the heels of a strong Payback PPV, it seems as if WWE is building discernable momentum and potential, potent, PPV selling storylines for Summer Slam in LA.

What Happened After WWE RAW Went Off the Air? (6/17/2013)

After Monday’s Raw went off the air, John Cena defeated Ryback in a tables match to retain his WWE Championship.

At one point in the match, Ryback flipped a table for no reason. A table was then lying against the turnbuckle for a long and and eventually Cena reversed a position and used an AA to drive Ryback through it.

Two Matches Have Time Cut at “Payback”; Update on What’s Next For Cena & Ryback’s Feud

0

Due to time constraints, WWE cut minutes from two matches at Payback last night – Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton vs. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns plus the Three Stages of Hell match with Ryback vs. John Cena.

Word at last night’s Payback pay-per-view was that the Ryback vs. Cena feud is over. The plan as of this weekend was still for Daniel Bryan vs. Cena to main event the Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

We noted before that WWE recently applied to trademark the names Torito and Torlito. This could be a new ring name for the former Mascarita Dorado, who has been signed to a WWE developmental deal for several months.

Tons of WWE “Payback” Notes; Will Ryback Beat Cena? How the Card Has Changed? What Two Stars May Turn Heel?

0

- As of this week, Ryback is not scheduled to win the WWE Title from John Cena at Sunday’s Payback pay-per-view. The whole idea behind the Three Stages of Hell match is that it will be used as a vehicle to get Cena over big for the summer.

- The Payback card was changed over the weekend. WWE announced Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan vs. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns on RAW but as of last Saturday, the plan was to do a Bryan vs. Orton singles match.

At last word, Bryan is still scheduled to be part of the WWE Title picture in July and August of this year.

- On a related note, it’s possible we see two heels turns at Payback, one with Bryan and the other with Chris Jericho.

After Raw went off the air, WWE set up a bonus dark match of John Cena vs. Ryback.

Reason Why WWE Changed the John Cena/Ryback Match to a “Three Stages of Hell” Match Revealed

0

Credit – Wrestling Observer

As noted, Ryback vs. John Cena at WWE Payback is now Three Stages of Hell with the following stipulations – a Lumberjack Match, a Tables Match and an Ambulance Match.

The change was made because Vince McMahon wants to do something epic with Cena, something that will be a memorable point in his career.

As of this week, the match is not being done to prolong the Ryback vs. Cena program, although they have nothing specific in place for Cena’s long-term booking.

After his Last Man Standing Match with Ryback at Extreme Rules Sunday, WWE Champion John Cena went against doctors’ orders and decided not to go to the hospital. On Tuesday, WWE.com spoke with WWE physician Dr. Michael Sampson to get an update on The Champ’s condition.

“He’s surprisingly doing well,” Sampson stated. “He does have multiple contusions and is pretty banged up from that match, but he is actually doing better than anticipated.”

As for a recovery timeline, Sampson described it as “day by day,” adding that he does not anticipate any problems that would hinder the process.

WWE .com Updates on Triple H’s Injury Status; Say He’s Suffering From Post-Concussion Symptoms

0

via WWE.com:

After a savage Steel Cage battle with Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules on Sunday, a physically battered Triple H was unable to continue in his match against impressive new Paul Heyman client Curtis Axel on Monday night’s Raw.

On Tuesday, WWE.com spoke with WWE physician Dr. Michael Sampson, who gave an update on the status of The Cerebral Assassin.

“After the pay-per-view match on Sunday, we advised (Triple H) on Monday that he shouldn’t wrestle because of head and jaw trauma he suffered from the sledgehammer attack by Brock Lesnar,” Dr. Sampson explained to WWE.com. “Obviously, we saw what happened Monday night: He went against medical advice and tried to wrestle. Luckily, he pulled himself out.”

After further evaluation, Sampson said The Game is still exhibiting some post-concussion symptoms and he’ll be held out of action until WWE’s medical staff can conduct further neurological tests.

“At this point, the neurological exams are all normal,” Sampson added. “But we will continue to employ neuropsychological testing to get a better idea how he’s doing mentally, as far as reaction time, thought process and so on.”

Sampson noted the additional neurological tests will likely be conducted near the end of this week, once The Game’s headache has subsided.

Check back with WWE.com for any future medical updates on Triple H as they become available.

Jim Ross Blogs on John Cena’s Health, Brock vs Triple H, & Hog Hunting With Shawn Michaels

0

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross published a new blog entry on JrsBarBq.com. Here are some highlights.

Hog hunting with Shawn Michaels: I had an amazing time this week going on the first hog hunt of my life with the great Shawn Michaels, @ShawnMichaels, and his hunting partner Keith Mark, @KeithMarkmra, on HBK’s Texas ranch. This hunt will be televised later this year on MacMillan River Adventures which airs on the Outdoor Network.

Elimination tag match on Monday’s Raw: Thought the elimination tag match was well done. Episodic TV is infectious when done well as are matches that tell a viable, easy to follow story. Elimination tags, where the person defeated leaves and only ends when one team has been completed eradicated, are about as easy to follow as it gets. (That’s why I enjoy the occasional 2 out of 3 fall bout or a rare, best of 5 or best of 7 series of bouts.)

John Cena going into Extreme Rules: WWE Champion John Cena is in a vulnerable position leading into Extreme Rules where many feel that the polarizing WWE Champion will fall to #1 Challenger Ryback. I can’t make a valid argument against that theory.

HHH vs. Lesnar: If the Brock Lesnar vs. HHH Steel Cage match doesn’t close the PPV, it’s going to make whatever follows this Slobber Knocker have to really hunker down to top what I expect to be the most anticipated bout at Sunday’s PPV. The physicality in this contest will be prominent and I expect a no frills, in your face, main event.

Don’t discount @HeymanHustle Paul Heyman’s involvement in this Sunday’s ferocious festivities as Lesnar’s “representative” who one would assume will be stationed at ringside. Will Heyman play a role in a Lesnar win Sunday?

Extreme Rules: One thing is for sure, Extreme Rules, if one objectively analyzes the card from top to bottom, has the potential for some younger talents or talents looking to regain needed momentum to have memorable nights. “Maximizing one’s minutes” was never more applicable than it will be for many inside the ring in St. Louis this Sunday night.

Extreme Rules is certainly not a one dimensional PPV and I’m anxious to watch it.
